Use this home maintenance checklist to help schedule repairs, and cleaning. Taking care of  a home is a big job but if you periodically check on your exterior, appliances, cooling, plumbing, security, and electrical systems, breakdowns can be prevented while saving money. Follow this checklist each month to help save time and money:

Landscaping:
Roofing:
  • Inspect roofing for missing, loose, or damaged shingles and leaks.
  • Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts.
Electrical Maintenance:
  • Inspect electrical cords for wear.
  • Check for frayed cords and wires.
Exterior Aesthetic:
  • Power-wash windows and siding.
  • Seal cracks and gaps in windows and doors with caulk or weather stripping; replace if necessary.
  • Touch up exterior siding and trim with paint.
  • Mend cracks and gaps in the driveway and walkway.
  • Inspect exterior door hardware; fix squeaky handles and loose locks.
  • Oil garage-door opener and chain, garage door, and all door hinges.
  • Clean window and door screens.
Bathroom Maintenance:
  • Check the water softener and replenish salt if necessary.
  • Clean faucet aerators and shower-heads to remove mineral deposits.
  • Inspect tub and sink drains for debris; unclog if necessary.
  • Flush out hot water from the water heater to remove accumulated sediment.
  • Check the water heater for leaks.
  • Replace interior and exterior faucet and showerhead washers if needed.
Kitchen Maintenance:
  • Clean refrigerator and freezer coils and empty and clean drip trays.
  • Check around kitchen and bathroom cabinets and around toilets for leaks.
  • Clean kitchen exhaust fan filter.
Other:
  • Vacuum lint from the dryer vent.
  • Replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Install a smoke detector on every floor of your home.
  • Test smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and all ground-fault circuit interrupters.
  • Tune up major home appliances before the holidays.
  • Seal tile grout.
