The impact flooding can have on your home can be disastrous, and incredibly overwhelming. In 2018, Trinidad & Tobago experienced one of the most devastating floods we have seen as a nation, and as climate change continues to escalate, these natural disasters are unfortunately projected to increase over time.
It’s important to prioritize the following measures to find the most effective, cost effective solutions while keeping both you and your house safe.
- Be aware your home may be contaminated with mold or sewage which can severely impact your health. Additionally, be on the lockout for wildlife which may have been displaced during the flooding.
- Return to flooded home during daylight hours to best assess damage and avoid dangerous objects or wildlife which may be within the vicinity of the disaster.
- Call an electrician to switch off the main power. Never turn power on or off in standing water as this may result in death.
- If you suspect a gas leak, , turn off the main gas valve, open all windows, and leave your house immediately. Contact the authorities and do not return until you are given the all clear.
- Wet walls and wet floors can breed dangerous mold and even lead to structural damage. Removing standing water is essential before attending to other damages in the home.
- Salvage what you can, discard what you can’t. This will be a painful process, but it is imperative you are honest with yourself to fully assess the damage caused by the flood, and to budget accordingly or seek the necessary assistance thereafter.
- Throw away food which may have come into contact with flood water; perishable foods that have not been refrigerated properly due to power outages; and those with an unusual odor, color, or texture.
Our country has seen a growth in environmental initiatives, and as the saying goes – We can hope for the best, but definitely prepare for the worst.
